An Anarkali lives or dies on how the skirt falls. The cut takes a lot of cloth — typically 3 to 3.5 metres at 44 inches — and it needs a fabric that moves as a mass rather than hanging in stiff panels, which is why georgette, crepe, rayon and Bemberg dominate this collection and heavy cottons do not.

Check the width before buying: at 44 inches a full-flare Anarkali needs noticeably more yardage than at 58, and the panel seams fall differently.
