Lycra here means an elastane-blended ground rather than pure elastane, which is never woven on its own. The blend is what lets a garment recover its shape after wear — essential on fitted blouses, leggings, churidars, bodysuits and anything cut close to the body.

Two things to check before cutting: which direction the stretch runs, since two-way and four-way behave differently on a pattern, and the recovery, because a ground that stretches but does not spring back will bag at the knee and elbow.
