A lining does four jobs: it makes a sheer fabric opaque, it lets a garment slide on and off, it hides seam allowances and interfacing, and it stops a scratchy outer fabric touching skin. Getting it wrong is what makes an expensive garment feel cheap.

Two rules worth following. Match the lining's weight to the outer fabric — a heavy lining drags a light dress out of shape. And choose a breathable lining for anything worn in Indian heat; a polyester lining under cotton undoes the reason you chose cotton.
