Canvas is the most hard-wearing cotton in the catalogue: a dense plain weave with enough body to hold a structure without interfacing. That makes it the right answer for tote bags, upholstery, aprons, shoe uppers and anything that has to survive being loaded and carried.

It is heavy going under a domestic machine — use a denim needle and a longer stitch length. Canvas sateen trades some durability for a smoother, slightly lustrous face.
